Blue Arctic version leaked online

The Samsung Galaxy S4 could be about to launch in another colour, according to leaked images appearing online this week.

Said snaps were showcased on a Japanese blog and show the new Sammy flagship in its dark blue garb, reportedly entitled Blue Arctic.

Alongside existing shades White Frost and Black Mist, the new variant is expected to launch to Japanese consumers in the coming months. Although there is yet to be official confirmation, the fact that one of the leaks comes from a consumer pamphlet all but confirms its authenticity.

After a wholly successful launch period for the Samsung Galaxy S4, clamours for additional colours have emerged as is often the case with new handsets.  Having initially launched in a similar “Marble” white palette, the Samsung Galaxy S III also quickly sprouted into several different shades.

Growing trend

These included the colourfully named Amber Brown, Garnet Red and Amethyst Purple, a trend Sammy has seemingly kept to when it comes to dubbing its variants on the Galaxy S4.

But it’s not just Samsung that’s broadened its colour range in the past few months, and we appear to be seeing a growing trend in vibrant and extravagantly named handsets across the board.

Back in October the usually reserved and fairly serious Nokia launched the latest additions to its Lumia family, and far from the monochrome efforts of devices passed, dressed them in vibrant shades of red, yellow, blue and even violet.

Similarly HTC, usually the purveyors of straight edged black and white handsets, launched its 8X device in such colours as the extravagantly titled California Blue and rather bizarre Limelight Yellow, whilst the 8S arrived in Domino and High-Rise Gray.

Despite sounding ridiculous at times, these weird and wonderful colours and names are becoming a vital tool for manufacturers in ensnaring potential customers, with the vibrant shades designed to better express a user’s personality than traditional black and white fare.

Express yourself

As mobiles become increasingly important to the fabric of our lives, colourful ones help to distinguish an individual from a crowd that may have the same device. Whilst picking one handset over another is indeed down to which is the better option, it also now reflects an important lifestyle choice as well.

This is something that Apple has faced criticism for and is rumoured to be rectifying. Having had its iPhone described as dull by some sectors, it is reportedly considering launching its upcoming device in a range of colours. Whether an attempt to attract new fans or to diversify its image, it’s definitely a sign of the times.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Blue Arctic will likely launch in overseas markets before the 15 May, although there is no word as to whether we will see it land on British shores. But, even if it simply stays as a Japanese exclusive, you can almost guarantee it won’t be the last colour variant we see before the year’s out.

And, if the past few months have been anything to go by, it certainly  won’t be the last device to don extravagant colours in an attempt to grab our attention.
